The Ironhammer Forge Empty The Ironhammer Forge

Post by Borin Ironhammer Mon Oct 06, 2014 1:46 pm

Borin arrives at the forge, refreshed from the meal he had at the tavern. He sets his axe down and lights the coals up again. he pumps the bellows a few times to get the fire nice and hot then takes a square of mild steel and puts it in the fire to start heating up he then take a much smaller piece of carbon steel that's about as heavy and sets it to heat up too. He begins to rummage through a pile of tools and old weapons to find his own woodcutting axe. "I've got to clean this place up" he thinks to himself as he searches "Maybe I'll get the fire mage to do it, I'm sure he can handle it. It's hard to burn down an anvil..."
He finally finds the axe under a piece of leather and sticks it into a tree trunk so he knows exactly where to grab it when he heads out to cut the branch to make Timmeans axe handle out of.
He then heads back to the forge and continues to pump the bellows to heat up his metal.

"The forge is looking good." Can be heard from the distance.

Volkihere emerges from the dark forest.

"Torvallis! I have not seen the centurion in quite some time, I'm here now however so what did you have to say."

"Torvalis! Would you fancy cleaning the place up a bit while I go cut a handle for the human's axe?" Borin asks still unsure if he can trust the mage around anbopen fire let alone a burning forge.
Borin then belts his wodcutting axe and throws his battle axe over his shoulder and heads out to cut a strong and sturdy axe haft and he just where to go to find the perfect branch.

The Ironhammer Forge Empty Re: The Ironhammer Forge

Upon returning to the forge Borin puts down his axes and the newly carved handle and goes straight to the forge which had now burned down to a low smolder. he took a look at the metal inside, it was a dull red colour, no good for smithing so he shoveled some more coal in and began pumping the bellows. Within minutes the larger piece of metal was a bright yellow, perfect forging temperature. Taking his tongs out of a pile of tools that he noticed Torvalis! had neglected to clean up he carefully took the larger piece of metal out and held it upright with about one quarter of it over the edge of the anvil. with a few precise strikes the initial square was a rectangle with a small section jutting out of it. he then placed it back in the forge for reheating. when he took it out again he placed the metal in a vice so that the main section of the rectangle could be punched. he took a punch that was the same shape as the section of the handle that the head would fit onto placed it on the hot metal and struck it a few times with the hammer. until the hole went through the axe head. After reheating the metal once more he began to draw out the wider section of the head opposite the part with the hole until it came to a thin edge. He then took a chisel and began to split the thin edge so the harder metal could so in to make a strong blade. He then took the smaller piece of metal out while it was still yellow and molds it to the shape that it would fit into the indent he just created in the other piece of steel. he then places both pieces of metal in the forge as close as possible to the section where the air comes in and buries them both in new coal and begins pumping the bellows as fast as possible the coal burns quickly and even the air around the forge becomes almost unbearably hot. When both Pieces of metal are bright white, almost to the point of melting he takes them out and dips them in hot wax so they don't rust and he vices the bigger piece to the anvil and places the smaller one in the indent and hammers them together quickly knowing that once they cool down to a yellow colour that they would be to cold for the bonding process to work. then he quenched the head in water realizing that this new axe after just being cooled from white hot to the temperature of cool water in 5 seconds would be to brittle to cut anything harder than cold butter he places it back in the forge for normalizing. after it heats back up and cools down slowly in the hot ash. He then heats it to hardening temperature and quenches it in the hot wax. The last process is the tempering when he heats it once more and lets it cool on the table. he then places it on the handle and wedges it in. after that he sharpens it on the grinding wheel and hangs up the finished product.

Borin walks into the smithy with an armful of firewood and throws it down near the forge. He looks towards Torvallis! "what are ye doing here now?" then he mutters something to himself that was along the lines of "crazy fire breathing bastard."

Timmean slowly approaches the forge, glancing around.

"Borin? Are you here?"

(OOG: Is the forge actually a building? Or just an open pit, like at the site? EDIT: if it's an open pit, it doesn't make much sense for me to open a door.)

((OOG: Until further notice, the forge is a large, sky open, fire-esque pit. Situated next to the lake, with a circle of trees as shelter. -comments, questions or concerns, contact me-))

Timmean bit his lip, glancing at the floor in embarrassment.

"Ah, yes... this is a little awkward; I'm afraid I don't have any money at the moment. I've been working for Phineas lately in exchange for lodging and some... special training. I had intended to do a few extra tasks for him to earn the coin for the ax, but there's nothing he needs done at the moment."

Timmean grimaced, then squared his shoulders and faced Borin.

"Of course, I don't expect to take the ax before I can pay, so you could hold onto it until I find some coin. Or, if you'd prefer, I can do some work for you directly. I'm not sure how much use my skills would be, but the offer stands."

Timmean raised his eyebrows, smiling slightly.

"Well, thank you... but without coin, I can't exactly pay for your drinks, either. Still, my skills are at your disposal. You'll certainly be free to take some of the wood we get while clearing the new field, and you'll have a share in the crops, if you like."

Timmean glared at the fire mage.

"Torvallis! Control yourself! We don't need any injuries around here, magical or otherwise."

Turning back to Borin, Timmean nodded.

"I'll be sure to look into including wheat and barely in the crops. As for payment, I'll cover your meals as best I can, and you're free to call on my any time one of my talents would be useful. Does that sound sufficient?"

(OOG: I'll wait for Borin's reply before assuming the ax payment is agreed on, but I'm going to continue using Timmean in the other forums, with the ax, since it sounds like Borin is okay with me taking it.)

"Now don't go using yer fire voodoo at my forge! I'll have enough o'that when yer damned fire god actually shows up. I still don't know whose brilliant idea it was to invite him to the forge anyway." Borin then looks to Timmean "That sounds great! and leave me a wee bit o'that wood as well it's good fuel for the forge."
