The Cellar and Pantry Empty The Cellar and Pantry

Walking into the hallway Ira grabbed the candle from the alcove next to the cellar steps. Careful of the pot in her hand, Ira opens the door to the cellar below, the candle casting a faint orange glow over the warn wooden steps. Minding her head she begins walking down the narrow steps to the dirt floor of the basement using her hand to balance.

"Ow!" Ira cries. She looks at her hand and finds the wood of the railing has splintered. I'll have to make sure we fix that. She pulls the fragment of wood out of the webbing of her hand muttering a quick healing spell to repair it. Continuing on she reaches the bottom of the steps and looks around in the dim candle light for the spice rack and the bread cupboard. There it is! Ira walks over to the far corner of the cellar where Horns has set up a small table for mixing his dry ingredients. Next to Horn's vials of dried flowers and herbs are the Kaernic spices that Phineas purchased over the summer. Ira places the pot on the table and begins pulling down spices: Syzygia, Badian stars, Myristica, Cassia bark, Vania pods, dried Anardana seeds, and dried Red Bergamont slices.

Ira's Cider Recipe:

1L fine apple cider (preferably Halfling made or Elven)
3 Syzygia pods
2 Badian stars
1/8 tsp ground Myristica seeds
1/2 roll of Cassia bark
1/2 Vania pod
1/2 cup dried Anardana seeds
12 slices of dried Red Bergamont

Once the spices are added to the pot of cider, Ira replaces the spices on their shelves and heads over to the bread cupboard. She opens the door and is just about to select a fresh loaf from the top shelf when she feels a tingling sensation on her hand.

"Aaa-aaa-aaaa-aaaah!" she screams as she shakes a very large spider off of her hand. She panics and jumps backwards from the cupboard, right into Horn's desk.

Upon hearing the scream of his Elven friend and assistant, Phineas the Halfling leaves his work at the kitchen counter and quickly goes to the door of the cellar.

“Ira!  Are you badly hurt?” he asks with a significant level of concern in his voice. “Do you need my help?”

Flustered and still somewhat frightened, Ira calls up to Phineas "Um, well no I guess not, but I, um, it looks like there are some spiders nesting in the bread cupboard and I mean..."

Hesitantly she continues "I was just startled when it landed on me." Feeling unnerved, foolish, and ashamed Ira looks down at the tiny spider as it scuttles away into the cupboard.

The Halfling Innkeeper finishes his task of wiping dry a days’ collection of freshly picked and washed apples. Those that are whole and not bruised are selected for storage and the rest need to be looked after as quickly as possible. He stacks the twig and reed baskets full of the “good” apples that he has set aside for the winter.

“Let me bring these apples down for cold storage and I’ll help clear out the cobwebs,” he says quietly. “Let’s see how your cider mulling is coming!”

"Oh, yes!" says Ira remembering the pot behind her. She turns around to examine the cider making sure she hasn't spilt any.

"It smells wonderful, well naturally it smells wonderful, I mean, this is fine Halfling cider, but I have to say I think I have outdone myself this time Phineas." She continues giving Phineas a wide smile, spider entirely forgotten.

"Do you know if Borin is having some? Because if so I should probably double the recipe. ... Actually maybe quadruple the recipe." She continues thinking of the large Dwarf.

Relying on his years of experience, the Halfling surveys the young Elf’s selection of herbs, spices and other flavourings and nods in approval.

“I really do like your choice of mulling spices!”

The Halfling laughs.

“Perhaps we should make enough for everybody!” He smiles. “Including our Dwarven smith!”

Phineas stops for second, remembering something.

“I have been so busy that I have forgotten to ask him to craft a few throwing daggers for me before he is too busy.”

“Do I throw daggers? Why yes I do! It is very much a Pennefeather Family tradition! After all, in my honest opinion, a longsword or a battle axe simply looks out of place in the hands of a Halfling.”

The Fae Tavern-keeper laughs.

“As I am sure that you know, that I would really rather stay away from physical violence. I consider myself to be much of a Halfling of Peace, a merchant and a healer, not a fighter. “ His smile fades a little. “However, we all have to defend ourselves from time to time, so it’s good to be prepared, just in case.”

After a pause, Phineas continues. “If you would ever wish to learn the fine art of dagger throwing, I would be very happy to show you!”

"Wow Phineas," Ira says impressed. "I would love to learn how to throw my dagger, it would definitely be helpful if Horns and I ever get caught in a situation again where I can't use my magic."

She picks up the pot and grabs a spider-free loaf of bread from the cupboard.

"Now let's get this cider upstairs, I think we could all use a nice warm drink with the cold weather setting in." Ira wedges the loaf of bread in the crook of her arm, switches the pot of cider to her left hand, and carefully picks up the candle. She then heads for the stairs waiting for Phineas at the base.

11:31 AM 19/11/14

Ira opens the door to the cellar and begins walking down the narrow steps to the dirt floor of the basement using her hand to balance, this time quite mindful of the splinters. At the bottom she walks over to the pantry, places the basket on Horn's desk, and begins sorting the various goods Phineas had brought back with him.

Hmmm, lets see... spices go on the rack here, bread and grains go in the cupboard, wines and ales go over by the casks, and meats and vegetables go in the cold storage at the back. She grabs a handful of spices and starts placing them in their labelled jars on the spice rack. Manjal, manna powder, black capsicum, petersilie, sissinghurst, basileus, anthriscus, sea salt, Dragon's leaf, dried cepa, and ground cassia. Excellent!

Pleased with her work Ira moves on to the flours and grains, making sure to check the cupbord for spiders first. Good, Horns and Phineas must have swept them out. Let's see, rice and barley go on the middle shelf, wheat on the top next to the flour, and these strange long tubular things can go down here on the bottom shelf next to that bag of weird spiral strands of wheat.

Perfect! Now for the meats
. Ira bounds up to the basket and takes out two wrapped packages, a large haunch of venison and what appears to be a shoulder of lamb. Hopefully its one of those demon sheep! Ira smiles to herself at the thought and lights a candle sitting on the desk before walking down to the darkest and coldest part of the cellar. Setting the candle down on a nearby shelf, she opens a small door set into the wall and, reclaiming the candle, walks into the larder. The dark room was cold even in the heat of the summer, and with winter setting in Ira couldn't help shivering. Two of the shelves were covered in thick slabs of slate dragged down to the tiny room by Borin earlier this year. I shall have to see if I can find some more on that land Tim is clearing, then we can store even more fresh food for the winter. Ira places the meats on the cool stone slabs in the coldest part of the larder near some skinned rabbits Phineas had brought home two days ago, and returns to the relative warmth of the cellar, taking care to shut the door behind her.

She walks back to the basket and looks over what's left. Wines, ciders, cordials, and ales. Over by the casks then. Ira picks up the basket and walks over to the wine rack. Apple cider goes here, Halfling wines here, Dwarven ales here, and Elvish cordials over here. Ira checks the basket to make sure she hasn't missed anything and finds a small sea blue bottle with a faded amber label. Confused she picks up the bottle and reads the elegant writing Arrack, 50% proof. Surprised and impressed that Phineas was able to procure such a rare liquor she places the bottle on a shelf next Phineas's prized spirits and with a quick look around to make sure she didn't miss anything, bounds up the stairs.
