[Sep 26th, 5pmish]

Durkis waits in the Watering Hole, pacing about, asking people if they've seen Herr recently.

Herr enters the Watering Hole as though he is terribly late for something!

OOG: I’m only now getting time to do something other than study lol, sorry!

Herr raises his brows, remembering what he forgot.
"Yes, I do, and yes i am!"
Herr walks over to Durkis and asks:
"So before we begin, how do you think a book is made?"

((I'm going to forego writing in the accent now, out of courtesy. Reading longer posts written in it is headache city))

"Ah, right. Well, looking at the construction of a book, the pages seem to be sewn together in some complicated pattern, and then glued or sewn into the spine.

The cover is covered with cloth, and that seems to have at least three layers . . . the external cover, the bit that covers inside and outside beneath that, and the bit that bridges the cover and the first page, and the cover and the last page.

The cover itself seems to be any open-sided U shape with sufficiently flexible but hard binding that can easily be replaced to spare the pages."

"yes, very good!"
Herr says, nodding and smiling.
"now, taking a look at the sewing of pages in this book..."
*generic book is displayed*
"...what do you think is used to sew it together? There are a couple of patterns for sewing the books but the one you see here is my favourite! I'm sure you could likely guess a suitable material for the outer covering of the book."
Herr suggests, obviously knowing exactly what he's doing.

"I mean, isn't that just a plant-based fibre? Is the thread particularly important? Do we expect animal tendons or leather to rot quicker or effect the pages? Hm. I suppose they might.

I was thinking a simple leather covering, it could even be a bottom-grain or a suede without problem. Right?"

"Indeed, something that rots would surely be detrimental to the book's integrity!

I believe you now understand enough to bind your own book. Do you have any other questions?"

"I suppose all I need at this point is practice?

I imagine there must be all sorts of small things that lead to a good binding . . . ah, well practice first!"

"Practice makes better-but-not-quite-perfect! I'm sure you'll be fine!"
Herr stands, smiles, and taps Durkis' shoulder before leaving.

OOG: I think that's all there is, yeah?

((OOG: yeah, let's say it is!))

Durkis looks thoughtful as Herr leaves and begins sketching some things on a piece of paper.
