I don't know it too well but basically if your shield gets hit with a certain number or higher a certain number of times it 'breaks' and can't block anything until it gets repaired. Basically just becomes a huge target.

To copy/paste from the rule book:
Shields will have different in game ratings the same as armour: Poor, Average, Exceptional, and Masterwork. Each rating provides a different level of strength for the shield. A shield may be broken if the damage from a single swing exceeds the threshold of the shield. Some shields will have the ability to resist these forces ‘x’ times per combat depending on their rating.
Poor 15 threshold
Average 20 threshold
Exceptional 40 threshold, 1 resist per combat
Masterwork 60 threshold, 3 resists per combat
Once a shield is broken it must be repaired by a smith or by using the spell “The Earth Will Mend Your
_____” and the wearer will take all physical and magical damage as if they have no shield. It is advisable to fix it or get rid of it immediately as it then becomes a large target!

this and 'how do non-___ see ___?' are the two things I work super hard to try to keep track of, especially while playing non-aware and/or non-psychic characters. Remember kids, if the label is on the inside of the container, and you aren't an alchemist, you have no idea what that potion is until you drink it.

And alchemists are technically supposed to take a full minute to identify a potion, but it feels really clunky to do that when there are a dozen different potions layed out in front of you and the non-alchemists are just reading the tags. It definitely feels like cast expects you to be able to just tell instantly from reading the tag.
